Heather Bull

It is with great sadness that we heard of the sudden death of Heather Bull:

Dear all, it is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the sudden death of Heather Bull, the wife of Graham Bull ("Bully"). Bully is our friend within NABD circles and a regular at many of our local rallies as was Heather. Apparently she suffered a massive brain aneurysm last Saturday whilst on her way back from a funeral, but I am informed that she was with her biker friends when she actually passed away. the funeral is Friday 1st September at Heddington Crematorium, Oxon. As far as I have been informed everyone will be meeting at the Plough pub at Arncott (where the Caldarium MCC hold their rally) and the actual service is at 2.00pm. All members of the Time Lords are invited and many of our regular rally going friends will be there to give her a real biker's send off with a party at the pub afterwards. Anyone wishing to go should make their way to the Plough for mid-day on the Friday.
Beemer, Time Lords

Heather was a staunch supporter of the NABD, and often worked with Graham during his time as NABD Rep for the Oxford area.

Russ Harding – East Leeds Lions Mcc

It was with extreme sadness that we heard of the death of Russ Harding, chairman of the East Leeds Lions Mcc, on the morning of July 7th following a bout of illness.
Russ was a rare and very special type of man whom I feel honoured to have known over the past five years.
Anybody who has ever visited the East Leeds Lions rally, traditionally held on Easter weekend, will remember Russ doing his ‘being everywhere at once’ thing wearing his Davey Crocket hat and a broad smile.
It is still hard to believe that such a genuine character can be taken away in such a quiet way. Our thoughts are with his family and the members of his club whose hearts must be breaking at the moment.
If the measure of a man is in the memories he leaves behind then Russ Harding is truly a giant amongst men and will remain so in the hearts of all who held him in such high regard.
RIP Russ, the biking world is a much poorer place without you.

NABD Launches Time Capsule Project - Project Pyramid

The National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD), in conjunction with the Sammy Miller Museum is embarking on an ambitious project this July -the first National Time Capsule to contain the hopes and wishes of the disabled biking community.

This 2 year project will span the entire spectrum of disabilities and the NABD are encouraging people to make a contribution to the capsule. You don’t have to be disabled to partake, just have views on what disability means today, and what your hopes are for the future. Contributions are being invited from affiliated clubs and members.

The launch of this ambitious project will be at Sammy Millers Museum in New Milton, Hampshire on 23rd July 2006. With a ceremony marked with an obelisk, the Time Capsule will be buried within the grounds of the museum and will stay there for 100 years. The museum is holding an open day for motorcyclists and the NABD invite everyone to join them in this celebration of disabilities and motorcycles.

A dedicated website will shortly be developed at www.projectpyramid.org.uk

Disabled Bikers Celebrate Milestone at The 2006 Manchester Motorcycle Show.

The National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) will be doing a presentation at the Manchester Motorcycle Show this weekend to celebrate gaining their 5,000th member.
A 53 year old mechanic from North Staffordshire who suffered a left leg amputation following a motorcycle accident in 1985 is to receive a framed certificate to mark his enrolment as NABD membership number 5,000.
NABD Chairman Rick Hulse said “We are very proud to now have 5,000 members and as the organisers of the Manchester Motorcycle Show have been staunch supporters of the NABD since our inception in 1991 we could have no better place to mark this significant milestone in the history of our association”.
THE NABD is a unique registered charity dedicated to helping disabled people to enjoy the freedom and independence of motorcycling. Financial grants made by the NABD are used to adapt motorcycles and motor-tricycles to suit the needs of disabled riders.
The NABD is a national charity with its base in Manchester and a network of representatives throughout the UK. It is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and is generally accepted as the leading disabled motorcyclists group in the world. They are regularly consulted by authorities such as the Driving Standards Authority (DSA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) on all matters relating to disabled motorcyclists.
Over the past fifteen years the NABD have helped thousands of disabled people in the UK & Eire with grants, design of special adaptions, licensing and legal advice, and support. In addition to this they have over recent years inspired and supported similar groups to set-up in Norway, Sweden, France and Japan.
The presentation will take place at 11:30am on Friday January 6th the main stage at the Manchester G-Mex.

NABD at the NEC Motorcycle & Scooter Show.

For the past fifteen years the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) have tried unsuccessfully to convince the organisers of the NEC Motorcycle & Scooter Show that they should allow the NABD a free stand at the show.
As the NABD is a unique registered charity which is specifically involved in helping motorcyclists, the vast majority of show organisers consider giving free stand space to the NABD as a service to their customers. Sadly this is not the case with the organisers of the NEC show 'MCI Exhibitions'.
However the NABD do have a stand at this years NEC show due to the generous sponsorship of Carole Nash Insurance.
Carole Nash has been a keen supporter of the NABD since its inception in 1991 and now she has made it possible for the NABD to have a double sized stand at Europe's biggest indoor motorcycle show.
For more information about the NABD see their web site www.nabd.org.uk or telephone 0870 759 0603 and ask for an information pack.

A new record donation for the NABD.

Until recently the largest single donation ever made to the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) was just short of £10,000.00  This donation was made by the Goldwing Owners Club of Great Britain (GWOCGB) four years ago.
On Sunday 23rd of October 2005 this record was well and truly smashed with the presentation of a new donation from the GWOCGB of £12,000.00. A suitably 'stunned' Rick Hulse (NABD Chairman) said when presented with the cheque at the Annual General Meeting of the GWOCGB "As with the previous donation from the Goldwing Owners, every penny of this donation will be used to fund grants to disabled people to help with the cost of special adaptions to bikes and trikes".
The uncommon brevity of the chairman's statement showing just how overwhelmed he was by the generosity of this new record donation.

Simon Milward Tragically Killed in Africa

It is with great sadness that the Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA) has to announce the passing on of its former General Secretary Simon Milward following a road accident occurred on the 4th of march 2005 near the city of Kayes in Mali (West Africa).
Simon, who set out on what he called The Millennium Ride at the beginning of 2000 was raising funds for charities providing medical assistance via motorcycles in poor countries. He had reached the West African state of Mali in West Africa on his way back to Europe when the accident occurred.
The NABD national committee would like to express their heartfelt condolences to Simons family and friends. The world of motorcycling can ill-afford to lose an ambassador of such calibre.

More details and a Book of Condolence are available on the FEMA website

It is with great sadness that we heard of the death of 'Crinkly' Phil Standring at 3.00 am on Thursday July 1st 2004.
Phil had been a dedicated supporter of NABD for many years holding a reps post and then a national committee post.
Phil has battled with cancer for the past two years, he passed away quietly following surgery for a broken hip.
The funeral will be held in Rhyl (North Wales) on Monday 12th of July. All who knew Phil are welcome, the meeting place is 66 East Parade (opposite the Rhyl Sun Centre on the Promenade) between 11.00am and 12.00noon.
Our thoughts are with Phil's son Pedro and all those he leaves behind. Phil was a fine man with a good heart and the world is a poorer place without him.

Motability: Update

Recently received from Tony Rogers at Motability: -

Over the last few months Motability have been carrying out preliminary work with a view to asking Motability's Governors for approval - in principle - for motor cycles to be available on the Motability Scheme. If this approval is given, Motability will then start a formal consultation process to identify - with all interested parties (including both the National Association for Bikers with Disabilities and the Disabled Motorcyclists Association ) - products which might be made available on the Scheme and how the financial arrangements would operate. At this stage it would appear that a Hire Purchase Scheme would be the most appropriate method of financing.
The reason we at Motability feel that the time is now right to address this issue again, is that over the last few years we have been totally absorbed in setting in place new processes and systems for the car scheme (which has nearly 400,000 customers) and establishing a new supplier (route 2 mobility) for the powered wheelchair and scooter scheme. This work is largely complete and we now feel in a position to consider additional products.
As you may already be aware, with the car and powered wheelchair/scooter schemes, it is a pre-condition of joining the Motability Schemes that potential customers must be in receipt of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance and the same rules would be applied for motorcycles.
As soon as we have anything further to report, we will make contact with the NABD and DMA".

M6 Toll Exemption

Disabled people who are in receipt of Disability living allowance (DLA) and companies who have vehicles (recognised by the DfT) for the specific use of disabled people can claim exemption from the tolls on the new section of the M6 motorway in the midlands.
Application forms and further information can be found at http://www.m6toll.co.uk/pricing/exemptions.asp or you can telephone 0870 850 6262. There is a charge of £5.00 but you are then exempt from tolls for three years.

The Virago-Star Owners Club has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and as part of its festivities decided to raffle eight and a half grand's worth of brand spanking new Yamaha XV1600A WildStar..!
Drawn at the NEC motorcycle show back in November, the winning ticket was bought by Rose Miles from Hertfordshire. Rose (62), pictured here collecting her bike with VSOC Chairman Kevin Hoyte said that she was delighted with winning such a wonderful bike. Although not a license holder herself, Rose and her husband currently enjoy riding and touring with their BMW, but now they can do it in style. Other beneficiaries from the raffle are to be NABD (the National Association for Bikers with a Disability) and a National Children’s Charity. The Virago-Star Owner’s Club is open to owners and riders of all Yamaha Virago, Drag Star, Royal Star, Venture Star and Wild Star motorcycles.

The NABD were very pleased to receive a donation of £1000 from Aston University Students Rag Charity Committee in November 2003.

We were chosen as a recipient by Bex Gresham, an NABD member on the Rag Committee.

Blue Badge Holder:

The NABD have been campaigning for a new type of badge system for disabled people using bikes and trikes, as the current blue badge is not suitable or this type of use. As an interim measure we have gained funding from the Department for Transport (Mobility & Inclusion Unit) to have a blue badge holder designed for use on bikes and trikes. The project is being carried out by The Salford University School of Art and Design from October 2003 with a final result expected in January 2004. The NABD will be visiting the project at various stages to guide the project until we choose a final design to be carried forward to production.

Also an NABD member in Scotland has been developing a blue badge holder of his own design which has shown promising results. We will publish further details as things progress.

If you fancy having a go at one yourself, take a look at THIS

Motability;

NABD Chairman, Rick Hulse had a meeting with two directors of Motability in June of this year following a meeting of the MAVIS Consultative Committee.

At the end of this meeting agreement was reached that motorcycles, sidecar outfits and trikes should be available via the Motability scheme. The directors of Motability said they would aim to have this new aspect of the scheme up and running in early 2004. Rick spoke to one of the directors again in early October and he was assured that things were still on track for very early 2004. A paper is being presented to the directors in November outlining the administration of this new aspect of the Motability Scheme.

This is seen as a major step-forward for disabled riders rights, and a victory for the campaigning power of the NABD.

We will publish further details as the project progresses.

UPDATE
The Men & Motors Documentary on the NABD will be shown on October 29th at 8pm.

Both the BBC, and Granada Men & Motors, will be filming at the You've Been Nabbed 12 rally at York Dragway (9th - 14th of May 2003).

You’ve Been Nabbed 12

Press Release

Following the phenomenal response to the ‘Free Run What you Brung’ at you’ve Been Nabbed 11, last year, the NABD have decided to repeat the offer at You’ve Been Nabbed 12.

At other events you will have to pay anything from £15.00 to £25.00 to register before having a blast on the drag strip. At You’ve Been Nabbed 12, 9th – 11th May 2003, at York Dragway, this registration will be completely free and you can run as any times as you like. This, added to the fact that even more entertainment than usual has been incorporated into the event, should make this one of the best rallies of 2003. (Regulars will be pleased to hear that the problems with the toilet facilities last year have now been resolved).

You Pays Your Money, You Makes Your Choice

Bikers for Bikers! It’s a common enough phrase. We have all used it at some time, usually with feeling. But what the hell does it mean? To my mind it means bikers looking after each other, it speaks of bikers as a family with a common concern for the welfare of all. But where does it start and how far does it go?

The weekend of May 10th – 12th is the traditional weekend of the NABD ‘You’ve Been Nabbed Rally’ but this year it faces competition from two big budget commercial events, the Thundersprint and an event at Santa Pod. All three events are offering a lot of entertainment, but only the NABD rally at York Dragway is raising money to help and support bikers. All of the proceeds from You’ve Been Nabbed 11 are used to help bikers, no wages are paid to anybody, no shareholders get a dividend, it’s that simple. It’s bikers for bikers. The question is which event will you be supporting?

If commercial events are to continue overtaking the biking scene what then of organisations like NABD, MAG and BMF? Where will the protection of our rights and the help that we need come from? Will we be able to get help from the companies who profit from commercial events? Will they protect our rights?

I have nothing against these types of companies; they have a perfect right to field events whenever and wherever they choose. But I do appeal to Bikers to think about their lifestyle when deciding which events to support throughout the year.

It’s not like you’re being asked to accept second best. The NABD rally features very high quality entertainment, including unusual aspects such as a full-blown Comedy Club, and even microlight flights. Perhaps even more unusual, the ‘Run What You Brung’ will be completely free (signing on fees at other events usually average £15.00 - £20.00 per rider). Added to this you have bands, stunt riders, and all sorts of other good stuff, and beer will be priced at £1.00.

Why so cheap? The answer is simple, we are bikers, and while we do have to make a profit we will not do so by fleecing other bikers.

Why this article? Because we can’t compete with the advertising budgets of commercial events, without passing on that cost to bikers.

All I ask is that bikers, who want to have a good time, do so at events, which will benefit bikers.

I hope to see you all at York Dragway in May (see advert for further details or contact NABD on 0870 759 0603 or see www.nabd.org.uk ).
