Raymond Wyer - Thumb Brake Adaption

After having to retire from work early (age 45) due to a knee replacement operation that was not successful, I decided to return to motor biking. As it had been many years since I had ridden a bike and also due to my right leg having very little bend, I chose to start again with a cruiser. This got me back on the road, but after a few months, I was yearning for something faster and more sporty.

With the help of my brother, I then went on to adapt a Fazer 600, we were able to extend the right peg and brake forward. At last I felt mobile again, this bike gave me a lot of pleasure but I was always unsure of the adaptions we had made.

Last year I decided to upgrade to a Fazer 1000, once again my brother brought the right peg and brake forward. With this bike having so much power, I felt I needed to know that the rear brake was more predictable. I started to ring around and make enquiries about having a Thumbrake adaption. One garage I rang asked if I had thought about getting a grant through the NABD.

I contacted the NABD and everyone was most helpful. They put my grant application forward and it was granted at their next national committee meeting. The nearest garage to me was Sam Coupland Motorcycles (tel; 01205 750266) at Frithville, Boston (the work was completed by them) and what a great team they are.

I am now on the road complete with my Thumbrake, so once again, thanks to the NABD for making this possible. Yours sincerely Raymond Wyer.

This NABD grant of ?200.00 was sponsored by a donation from III Rivers HOG UK
