Vultures Ride for a Reason

In the grand scheme of Motorcycle Owners Clubs, the Thames Vale Vultures are quite juvenile, but growing steadily. The Club meets one evening a month in a biker friendly pub on the outskirts of Reading, Berkshire, and also arranges regular ride-outs.

As the club began to grow, we began to discuss charitable causes that the members would like to support. It was at this time that Geoff mentioned NABD and their aims. Following further research via the internet and the NABD video, it was agreed unanimously that NABD was the cause that we would support and be affiliated with (if they would have us!).

The NABD then had a lapse in their usually thorough vetting process, and affiliated our Club with them.

In July, several of the Club members attended the Wokingham Bike Show with the intention of promoting our Club in the area, and also to raise awareness of the NABD. Although this was quite successful on both counts, the club members still felt there was more they could do to support the NABD.

At one of the monthly meetings, two of the members, Colin and Sean were crying into their beers (well, orange juices) due to their rapidly approaching middle age. Several ways they could prove their youthfulness were discussed, and one such suggestion was riding from Lands End to John O’Groats. One of the very switched on wives (myself) added that if it was a serious consideration, then it would also be an ideal way to raise some money for the NABD.

As further discussion ensued, two more members also expressed the desire to participate.

From here the idea was born.........

Club members have actively been pursuing avenues for sponsorship, with everyone having a part to play in what initially seemed quite a simple idea. As time has galloped by, we have all come to realise that although the idea is simple, the organisation and arrangement of sponsorship is not.

Following numerous brain storming meetings, it has finally been cast in stone that the four intrepid riders with arses of steel (apart from Pete, who’s Kawasaki Drifter has a seat like a sofa!) will be leaving the Madjeski Stadium in Reading at 06.00am on Sunday 29th May 2005. The fab four will then be heading down to Lands End, with the aim of the final destination for that day being Bristol. The aim is to reach John O’Groats on Tuesday the 31st May, with the safe return to Reading on Wednesday 1st June.

We have already raised and received £500.00, but want to raise (and collect!) as much as possible.

Those of you who want to keep up to date with the rides arrangements can visit our website www.tvvultures.co.uk and look under ‘Charity Run’, these details are updated regularly.

Or you can ring Sean on 07742 455798. In addition to this, NABD members are always welcome at our meetings!
