It was 7 o’clock in the morning on the first Sunday in March and bloody cold when we pulled into the car park at the Ace Cafe. This was the second Mad March Trike Sunday that the Ace Cafe has hosted and this year it was to be in aid of the NABD. Last years event had been very well attended but the cold weather looked like it might put people off. How wrong could we have been?
It wasn’t long before the first trikes started to arrive, and then they just kept coming. Amongst the first to arrive were a group of half a dozen Rewaco trikes that had come down from up north somewhere. A very impressive sight they made too. After that just about every possible type of trike turned up. From the ‘ready made’ to the ‘home made’ and everything in between. I can honestly say that I have never seen so many trikes in the one place before.
Several NABD members from London, Kent, and Essex, brought their own trikes along to display on the stall and I must say a very big thank you to all those who made the effort. Without their help the day would not have been the success that it was. Mark Wilsmore, who owns the Ace Cafe, was so impressed that he has decide to make it an annual fundraiser for the NABD and is looking to get corporate sponsorship and turn it into a show with trophies for the best trikes.
As the day progressed more and more trikes turned up, then one pulled into that car park that looked familiar. Those of you who have satellite or cable TV might have recognised it also. It was the trike that Mark Evans (of Discovery Home and Leisure fame) had built on his ‘A Bike is Born’ series. Mark himself rode up from Surrey on it, as he is opening a new dealership for Boom Trikes in Surrey.
Of course I had to go and do the “Have you heard of the NABD” bit, and would you believe it, yes he had thanks to the boys at Boom Trikes. He’s very interested in what we do and has made some enquires about getting his workshop registered with the Motability people. So keep your eyes out for Bulldog Trikes in the motorcycling press.
All in all the day was a great success, long, cold, and tiring, but well worth it. We managed to raise the grand sum of £364:63. So remember the date next for year, the first Sunday in March, and lets see if we can make this one of the premier shows in the country for trikes and the NABD.
