Shifnal Rocks for the NABD
|
|
|
When Steve Glaze, as NABD Rep
for Shropshire, organised the first
'Rock Night' in Shifnal to raise
funds for the NABD, nobody had
any idea what was to come.
All who assisted in organising that
first event must have felt that it
would be a small do, and steadily
grow with time (after all Shifnal is a
small town and we didn't do very
much advertising); but we were
wrong.
The very first NABD Rock
Night was a roaring success, over
subscribed, with people queuing
outside waiting for folk to leave so
that they could come in. All who
attended so enjoyed themselves
that they wanted one every month!
So we have held two each year
ever since then.
Steve Glaze retired as NABD Rep
for Shropshire due to health
problems a year ago, but his
legacy lives on, and the NABD
members in Shifnal held their sixth
Rock Night
on November 21st and
in terms of fund-raising efforts, it
was the best yet.
We all played our small part in
organising the event, designing
tickets and posters, gathering raffle
prizes, and other small but
important deeds. Susie and Ferret
(Geoff) did an outstanding job of
selling tickets. We were blessed
with some wonderful raffle prizes,
including Clay Pigeon Shooting, a
Microlight Flight, a DVD player, a
Mountain Bike, and many more.
The Oddballs MCC once again
supported us, and thanks to Doris
(Phil) who is gifted at sourcing
fantastic bands, we all rocked the
night away to the sounds of Room
101 and The Boogey Men.
If 'parting people from their money'
ever becomes an Olympic sport,
then Tevan Thomas is the person
to have on your team. Not satisfied
with charging people to come in,
selling everyone raffle tickets, and
persuading them to partake in the
'lucky dip', she then shook the
collecting tin at everyone's wallet
and gave them her irresistible
winning smile.
Gren Russell told us
later that it was the largest sum he
had ever counted from a collection
box (£102.03).
In addition to the money in the
collection tin, the evening raised a
further £791.30 for the NABD. It
was fun raising the money, and we
send our thanks to all who helped
in the organising, and by donating
raffle prizes. Everyone is looking
forward to doing it all again in 2004.
