Me and my brother Ian got to the Swiss Chalet, in Goarse Hill, Swindon, at about 8.45 am to help Dave Ladd the Bristol rep set up the stand, which because of the weather had became a table in the fireplace inside the pub. Once the setting up was done we sat down for a free breakfast, which was supplied by the pub. At this time in the morning there were already about twenty to thirty people in the pub, which seemed promising for the day ahead despite the weather. At about the 11.30 am the event was opened by local speedway star Lee Adams.
The first band The Hoggs' came on at about noon and played the only way they know how too, very entertainingly. It was at this point that me and Dave became a bit busy with people asking for information about N.A.B.D and also wanting to join and buy T shirts etc. Then came the next band 'Paradox'. I was interested in seeing them as I had seen them at the first Cornbury Park rally as 'Wismic'. The average age of the band is about sixteen but the quality of the musicianship is much much older. Look out for them on the rally scene in the future. Me, lan, Dave, and John Lance a local member who does a lot to spread the word of the N.A.B.D decided to have a drink at about this point. So it was a case of 2B or not 2B (2B is a bitter) the locals will know what I am on about!
The next band was The Mick Rutherford Band', with their good old hard hitting blues, played in the usual 'in your face' way. I love the abuse of the base at the end of the set. One thing that I forgot to mention earlier was the fact that the N.A.B.D stand was next to the reptile table. Which featured a variety of snakes, a Tarantula spider, and a six to eight foot python. The kids loved it and for a fiver you could have your picture taken with one of the snakes. Thanks to Wayne for supplying them for the day.
The next band was 'British Bulldog' a three-piece band, which caught my ear as they started, they set off with a Manic Street Preacher's number, and then went straight into some Pink Floyd, which I thought was unusual. It was not long after they had finished their set that things became a bit unclear, not so much because of an alcohol intake but just the fact that I was knackered. And I think I can say the same for Dave too. There were another three or four bands all of which were very good and all went down well with the crowd.
At nine o'clock the landlord John held an auction which I think raised at least six hundred pounds plus. Also at this point some of the lads raised about sixty pounds for John the landlord to go on stage with the python round his neck. This may seem quite easy to some people but John is terrified of snakes.
At the end of the night Dave and me did our little bit to add to the occasion by holding the raffle while certain young ladies concentrated on getting blue! Blue tickets that is, out of the bucket. The raffle over, it was time to go. Dave Pankhurst (one of the organizers) had offered to put us up for the night at his house. So we stayed there Saturday night as it is in walking distance of the pub. We also had an offer of a place to stay from Ivor Branscombe (a local NABD member from Chiseldon). I must thank Ivor very much for doing the photographs for this write up.
Also I would like to thank John the landlord for letting the guys and girls use the Swiss Chalet for the event. And also the organizers themselves Dave (Panky) Pankhurst, Mo, Dawn, Gail, Wayne and Stretch. And also everybody that came and supported the Swiss Chalet crew and helped them support the N.A.B.D.
Oh! By the way, the guys and girls raised in excess of...................
THREE THOUSAND POUNDS. What can you say to that? Except damn well done to all concerned.
