Yamaha 600 Fazer

Martin Deans - Thumb Brake, Throttle, and Damper

July 2001 I suffered a Brachial Plexus injury to my right arm, less than 12 months later I decided to get back on two wheels. After much information gathering and visiting bike shops I purchased a 2002 Yamaha Fazer 600 and decided to convert the controls to the left-hand side with the help of the NABD.

Me and some of my mates set about moving the throttle body to the left-hand side and also adapting the brakes. The rear foot brake pedal now operates the front wheel brake, I decided on this because of predominantly using the front brake and freeing up some of the controls on the left hand. The adaption to this is by way of a Honda Blackbird rear master cylinder replacing the smaller standard Yamaha cylinder.

A Thumb Brake, courtesy of the NABD, operates the rear brake. The provision of a grant by the NABD for the steering damper to aid the handling/control of the bike has proved invaluable. In addition to all of the above I've had a MIL quick-shifter fitted which ensures clutchless gear changes up the gearbox. I ride using my left hand and Velcro my right glove to the handlebar. This aids stability and confidence in riding.

Without the great assistance of the NABD it would have taken me much longer to return to the road.

Thanks NABD

This NABD grant of £397.87 was sponsored by several donations made in memory of James Wood.
