RAF Wittering

By Karen Marshal Lincolnshire Rep

I had a phone call in early September from Alex Jackson at RAF Wittering Motorcycle Club, to ask if I would go the following week to collect a cheque on behalf of the NABD. Unfortunately my fella couldn't go with me due to work, so I took my mate Barry, who's a NABD member, to keep me under control (all those men in uniform - it's a hard life!) I also took my youngest son, 9yr old Richard.

His Headmaster gave us the thumbs up when I told him what we were going for, just said to take lots of photos!

We were met by Alex and escorted through the base to a large hanger, where we met other members of the club. Flt. Lt. Bill Auckland (the Officer in charge) explained to us how they had raised the money. They had a 6 hour moped mayhem and also an airfield track day. Dave Sanders from Peterborough Kawasaki provided the mopeds, and also subsidised the event. The club has 35 members and was only re-started in January this year. In the hanger were 6 Harrier jump jets, one of which we got to sit in (thanks Bill!), a fire engine, a ground to air missile launcher, and some of the club's bikes. The members raised £5,100, to be shared between the NABD, the Air Ambulance, and Marshfields Special Needs School at Peterborough (£1,700 each). We all had a fantastic time, even though the weather was atrocious.

Well worth the 200 mile round trip.
Thanks again to all concerned. What a great day!

Karen (Lincolnshire Rep.)
