Peyton's 'old world charm'
|
It was Sunday 1st of June 1997, 9 o'clock A.M. A beautiful summers day, blue skies, sun shining, warm breeze. Riding my 1929 Rudge Special on my way to a social run with the Vintage Motorcycle Club.
Everything in the garden was lovely until a Land Rover ploughed into me, causing multiple injuries to my right leg and a subsequent amputation above my knee.
I was determined to ride again, my interest being vintage and post-vintage bikes.
I had lost the Rudge (written off) and felt unable to ride solo, so a sidecar outfit seemed to be my only alternative. To this end I purchased a 1933 Sunbeam Lion. I obtained a sidecar chassis but was unable to find a suitable sidecar, so I made a 'Tradesman's Box' sidecar as a temporary measure which I used (and still use on occasion) for club runs.
Being disappointed at its performance, and conscious of the delay it caused other members, I sought a more modern machine. Electric start, I considered to be a must, together with reliability and comfort (rear springs - WOW). Reading the advertising "If the constant quest for supersonic speed has left you by the wayside, the old world charm of the Ural outfit will be for you".
I was introduced to the new Ural outfit by Nick Boyland of 'Rhino Trikes' and decided to purchase one. Nick executed the necessary modifications; changing right foot brake to left foot, left foot gear change to right hand operation, and right foot peg to a platform to keep my artificial foot and leg secure.
I am now using the bike with great satisfaction and delight. (I include photos of both outfits, which may be of interest and encouragement to other members).
I have no hesitation in recommending Nick at Rhino Trikes for his engineering expertise and his helpful attitude toward customers.
Best wishes and happy motorcycling to all at the NABD
